Military equipment of the Second World War: Tank 4TP

Tank 4TP

In January 1937, the CSU decided to replace the TK and TKS tankettes with new reconnaissance vehicles. The design was based on the latest British solutions by engineer S. Cardin and Captain V. Loyd.

Already in December 1936, Englishman Eduard Khabich completed the development of the four-ton PZINE-140 tank. In addition to the general model on the British chassis, the car was a completely independent design. The engine developed by Englishman S. Werner and Her Dovcontt reached 95 km and was located on the right side of the fuselage, next to the driver. This decision made the car asymmetrical. In addition to the driver, the crew also included the commander.

These vehicles had the following armored battalions:

1 armored battalion in Poznan (9 vehicles)
4th armored battalion in Brest (9 vehicles)
5th armored battalion in Krakow (9 vehicles)
6th armored battalion in Lviv (17 vehicles)
7th battalion tank battalion in Grodno (25 vehicles)
8th tank battalion in Bydgoszcz (9 vehicles)
12th tank battalion in Lucca (9 vehicles)

In November 1937, the prototype (without weapons) went on its first trip. During the Autumn 1937 rally, the tank drove 1,860 km without failures, so the armored weapons command considered the 4TP to be a successful design. The next step towards creating a full-fledged reconnaissance vehicle from the prototype was the selection of appropriate weapons. Initially, it was planned to equip the tank with a Bofors turret with a 37 mm cannon, exactly the same as the 7TP. Unfortunately, it turned out that the commander would have to play the role of loader and gunner, which, of course, would negatively affect the tank's combat capability. In turn, if the tower were enlarged so that another person could fit into it, the entire structure of the machine would have to be changed. Therefore, the turret had to remain single, equipped with WZ. 38 FC-A 20 mm combat weapons and a machine gun.

In May 1938, the PZINE-140 /4TP underwent additional tests, during which design flaws were identified. Firstly, the tank swayed too much when moving, which made it difficult to conduct targeted fire on the move. Military experts decided that after minor improvements, the tank would be suitable for mass production. KGUS planned to gradually replace the TK and TKS tankettes with new machines. According to the armored vehicles development plan, 480 4TR tanks were to be part of 18 infantry division reconnaissance companies and four motorized rifle divisions.

In May 1939, the 4TP passed its last test drive. In total, during all the tests, he drove about 4,300 km without serious breakdowns. When it seemed that the new tank could be put into mass production, the General Staff decided that in a few years the 4TP would become obsolete. The project was subsequently closed.
